Blues Bar-BQ's Favorite Links for Blues Lovers
Here are a few links we have come across that should be of interest to blues lovers everywhere. Check them out. If you have any really good ones, send us an e-mail and we'll see about adding them.
Southland Blues Magazine (http://www.southlandblues.com)--Orange County's favorite blues magazine. Pick one up free at most blues venues or get a subscription and have it delivered to your door every month.
Martini Blues (http://www.martiniblues.com)--A cozy Bistro in Huntington Beach to catch some fine blues while enjoying a great meal. Check their schedule and call for reservations to avoid a wait.
The Off Campus Pub (http://www.offcampuspub.com)--Sports bar flavor with a large wooden dance floor near the Cal State Fullerton campus. Eat, drink and dance your blues away.
Destination Doowop Links Page (http://www.destinationdoowop.com/links.htm)--A great web radio show (they play songs off the Blues Bar-BQ CDs) at 9PM (Eastern) and lots of links to bands (including Blues Bar-BQ) that you might not otherwise find on the web.
The Prime Spot (http://www.theprimespot.com)--Long Beach, California's local connection. Find out what's happening in the Long Beach Community.
Boogie Woogie.com (http://www.boogiewoogie.com)--Craig's favorite link to what's going on in the world of boogie woogie piano.
Blues Lyrics http://www.geocities.com/BourbonStreet/Delta/2541/az-singr.htm)--There are lots of blues lyrics sites. Just do a search on www.Google.com for "blues lyrics". This one has a lot of less common songs and artists that you sometimes don't find on the other sites.
Buck Wildstar (http://www.myspace.com/buckwildstar2) Fronted by our guitar player Geoff Gurrola, this 3-piece features Blues Bar-BQ's JoJo Hughes on drums and Bobby Abarca on bass. They play "roots blues, soul, power" to quote their site. Catch them if you get a chance--you won't be disappointed.
Savage City (http://www.savagecity.info)--Nominated "Best Blues Band", Orange County Music Awards. With a 5-piece horn section, this jump/swing/blues band really puts gets that big band sound. Deanna Savage on vocals leads the show, and it's quite a show. Check out some song samples on their web site, but for a real treat, see them live.
Chris Anderson Group --A solid 3-piece group with a good selection of music from blues to rock.
2000 Lbs of Blues (http://www.2000lbsofblues.com)--Lead singer Mike "Pink" Arguello always puts on a show and is currently backed by Kid Ramos on guitar. Lots of sound for your money. (This band is always loaded with talent and you never know who might show up to play.)
Bubba and the Big Bad Blues (http://www.bubbablues.com/index.htm)--Nominated "Best Blues Band", 2003 Orange County Music Awards. These guys have been around for over a decade and can always be counted on for a great show. If you like Texas blues guitar like you'd hear from Freddy King or Stevie Ray Vaughan, you'll like these guys. Nominated as one of the best blues bands in Orange County at the 2003 Orange County Music Awards.
Selah Recording Studio in Los Alamitos, CA--Engineer Dave Gehlahr is a master at pulling just the right sound out of your instruments. JoJo loves the way he makes his drums sound. Dave really knows his equipment and works fast to help you get the most out of your studio time. Call them at (714) 898-5220 or (562) 430-1780 or see their web site. They did both our CD's.
Here are a couple of places we have been and some places that have been recommended by others. If you have a favorite spot, e-mail craig@sherline.com and let me know and I'll add it to the listing. Got a favorite Bar-BQ sauce? Let us know about that too. We want to include anything we can here that relates to tasty stuff.

Harlon's Bar-B-Que O'Hare Airport, Chicago, IL If you're passing through O'Hare and need to grab a bite to eat, don't settle for the usual pizza or burger. Get the real stuff at Harlon's. It's worth a little extra walking to find it. I assume it is part of a chain. Hope they're all this good.--Craig

Sonny's Bar-B-Q Orlando, FL Craig's cousin took him here for dinner and it was mighty fine. Good sweet southern-style ice tea and pork & beans. That's fried okra in the bowl at the top of the photo fir you Yankees.

| (Sorry, no photo available.) | Burrell's Barbecue 305 N. Hesperian, Santa Ana, CA (714) 547-7441 Burrell's had a food booth at the 2003 Doheny Blues Festival that had the longest line. Bar-BQ expert James Harman said from the stage, "You are in the presence of greatness. Burrell's Barbecue is here!" I braved the long line, and he was right. Great stuff. --Craig |

Spanky's B∙B∙Q Pit 127 W. 43rd St., New York, NY 212-575-5848 After the '06 New York Marathon we tried this place and were glad we did. The pulled pork sandwiches were good, the prices reasonable (especially for NYC) and they even brew their own beer. The hot tip, however, isn't on the menu. They will cook a WHOLE PIG to special order. A large group near us had ordered one while we were there and it took two guys to carry it out to the table--apple in the mouth and all. |

Joey's Smokin' B-B-Q 2995 El Camino Real, Carlsbad, CA 920009 (760) 929-1396 It's kind of a strip mall location, but the food is really good. Best of all they play blues on the sound system too. There are also locations in Carmel Valley (Del Mar), CA and Coeur D'Alene, Idaho. I've only tried it once but I'll definitely be back soon. |
JoJo Department: OK, we'll finish with one that is just plain strange. They say you'll find everything on the Internet, and here's a site that relates to all things "JoJo." They included a link to our drummer JoJo Hughes' page on musician's earplugs, so the least we can do is return the favor. See http://lyrics.rare-lyrics.com/J/JoJo.html. Daniel also hosts a rare lyrics site at http://www.rare-lyrics.com in case you can't remember those old Bob Dylan or Billie Holiday lyrics.
